GEEVAGH WELCOME HOME WALKGeevagh is located in the
South-East of County Sligo. See Route Map for the
Walk. Leave Geevagh and go left for about a half mile. Turn left up the
road leading up to St. Elba's Grave. This road is tarred for about one
and a half miles. It is then a rough stone track leading up the mountain
for another three miles. Follow the YELLOW markers up to and through the
OPEN CAST mine. Make sure you keep to the left after you come down into
the mine. You will see the coal seams under the rock on your left as you
go along the mine floor. Ascend out of the mine via a rough stone
"stairs". Follow the yellow markers along ALT NORAH and enjoy the
magnificent view over the Arigna Valley away to your right. Don't go too
near the edge. Keep on the top of the escarpment. Do NOT follow the
yellow markers down the hill. KEEP UP and go straight along the top.
Geevagh Walk markers should be painted on rocks along the route from
here on. About about one and a half miles along the Alt Norah escarpment
turn left for about 150 yards. This will bring you out on an old mine
road. GO right down to the tarred road along this old road. GO LEFT on
the tarred road for about TWO MILES until you come to the entrance to a
FOREST ROAD on your left. Go along the forest road. if the markers are
not clear follow the map supplied.. This winds around to bring you out
on an old road over GEEVAGH. Go right and back to Geevagh. The route is
about twelve miles long. The first half is along the route of the newly
formed "MINERS WAY". it is all very spectacular. If the day is clear
there are magnificent views over North Roscommon, Sligo & Leitrim.
Numerous lakes and mountains give a sometimes breath-taking vista as you
go along. Take the walk at YOUR OWN PACE and enjoy the walk of a
lifetime. Keep your map handy and consult it if you are in doubt. NOTE:
If you wish to visit Elba's Well, be careful. As you go up high you will
see a rocky escarpment about 500 yards to your right. Elba's Well and
Grave is at the bottom of this escarpment about half way over. The
easiest way to it is go above the escarpment until you begin to see
Lough Allen away to your left. Look out for a Turf- Machine track on
your right. You should see a large Rock away on the top of the
escarpment. St Elba's Well is down the rocks about 50 yards further on.
Follow the machine track towards the big rock. When the track wears out
go over rough ground to the rock. It is not an easy route but worth the
effort.
